About WhyIsItExpensive.com

Our mission, methodology and how we explain prices.

Our Mission

WhyIsItExpensive.com exists to answer one of the most common questions people ask: why does this cost so much? We provide clear, data-driven explanations for why everyday products, food, energy and commodities are expensive — and whether prices are likely to rise, fall or stay stable.

What We Cover

We currently cover 100 commodities across five categories:

  • Food & Drink — Coffee, Eggs, Chocolate and more
  • Dairy — Milk, Cheese, Butter
  • Energy — Diesel, Gasoline, Electricity, Natural Gas
  • Agriculture — Cocoa, Sugar, Tractors, Fertilizer
  • Real Estate — Houses

Our Methodology

For each topic, we identify the main supply, demand, production, transport, energy, climate and market factors that can influence prices. Each Price Pressure score is an editorial assessment on a 0–100 scale; it is not an official commodity index and should not be treated as investment advice.

Forecast labels — Rising, Stable or Falling — are directional editorial assessments. A production-grade version of the platform should attach a dated primary source to each material claim and update the underlying data before changing a forecast.

Research Standards

  • Prefer primary and authoritative sources such as statistical agencies, commodity organisations, regulators and recognised international institutions.
  • Separate factual market data from interpretation and clearly identify editorial assessments.
  • Show when an article was last reviewed and avoid presenting estimates as measured facts.
  • Use historical context and supply/demand mechanisms to explain price movements rather than relying on generic claims.
